The first official Women's Day was organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909. Inspired by this, Clara Zetkin, a German feminist and socialist, proposed the idea of an International Women's Day at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen. The following year, the first International Women's Day was celebrated across Europe.
In 1922, March 8th was officially declared International Women's Day by Vladimir Lenin to honour women's role in the 1917 Russian Revolution. The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day in 1977, further solidifying its global significance.
