Celebrating International Women's Day: A Global Call to Action

Celebrating International Women's Day: A Global Call to Action

Leana Visagie

A Brief History

The origins of International Women's Day can be traced back to the early 20th century, rooted in the labour movements of North America and Europe. The first official Women's Day was organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909. Inspired by this, Clara Zetkin, a German feminist and socialist, proposed the idea of an International Women's Day at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen. The following year, the first International Women's Day was celebrated across Europe.

In 1922, March 8th was officially declared International Women's Day by Vladimir Lenin to honour women's role in the 1917 Russian Revolution. The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day in 1977, further solidifying its global significance.
Themes and Significance

Each year, International Women's Day is marked by a specific theme that highlights pressing issues and encourages collective action. For 2025, the theme is "Accelerate Action", emphasizing the need to speed up progress towards gender equality. This theme calls for increased investment in women's education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, as well as stronger efforts to combat gender-based violence and discrimination.

Celebrating Achievements and Raising Awareness

International Women's Day is an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women in various fields. From trailblazing scientists and entrepreneurs to influential artists and activists, women have made significant contributions to society. Events such as conferences, panel discussions, art exhibitions, and performances are held worldwide to honor these accomplishments and inspire future generations.

In addition to celebrating achievements, International Women's Day also serves as a platform to raise awareness about the challenges women continue to face. Issues such as the gender pay gap, lack of representation in leadership positions, and violence against women are highlighted, prompting discussions and actions to address these inequalities.

How to Get Involved

There are numerous ways to participate in International Women's Day and support the cause of gender equality:

  1. Attend or Organize Events: Join local events or organize your own to celebrate women's achievements and discuss important issues.
  2. Support Women-Owned Businesses: Make a conscious effort to support businesses owned and operated by women.
  3. Advocate for Policy Changes: Engage with policymakers to advocate for laws and policies that promote gender equality and protect women's rights.
  4. Educate and Raise Awareness: Use social media and other platforms to share information about gender equality and the importance of International Women's Day.
  5. Donate to Charities: Contribute to organizations that work towards empowering women and addressing gender-based issues.

International Women's Day is a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality and the work that still needs to be done. By celebrating women's achievements and taking action to address ongoing challenges, we can collectively forge a more inclusive and equitable world. Let us use this day to reflect, celebrate, and commit to accelerating action for a better future for all women.
